Feature of Sodium Saccharin
High sweetness
The sweetness of sodium saccharin is about 300-500 times that of sucrose, and a very small amount can achieve a significant sweetness effect.
Low calorie
Saccharin sodium is not absorbed by the human body and can be automatically excreted with urination and defecation, therefore it has a low calorie characteristic.
Widely used
Commonly found in beverages, pastries, candied fruits and other foods to enhance sweetness. It is also used as a brightening agent, blood circulation testing agent, penetrant, etc. for electroplating nickel chromium.
Types of Saccharin Sodium
Saccharin Sodium Anhydrous
Anhydrous sodium saccharin is a white crystalline powder with no odor or a slight aroma. It has a strong sweet taste with a bitter taste and is easily soluble in water. Its sweetness is about 500 times that of sucrose. Anhydrous sodium saccharin has a high solubility in water, and even in extremely dilute solutions, it still has a strong sweet taste.
Sodium Saccharin Powder
Sodium saccharin, also known as sodium phthalimide, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H4NNaO3S. It is a food additive and has no nutritional value to the human body. Dissolved in water, the sweetness in dilute solution is 200-500 times that of sucrose, and there is a bitter taste when the concentration is high.

What Is Sodium Saccharin Derived From

Sodium saccharin is a sweetener, which is artificially synthesized. It is not sugar, and it is not the essence of sugar. It is extracted from coal tar. It can also be called sodium saccharin. Accepted by the food industry and also accepted by some consumers, it will not be quickly absorbed and metabolized by the body.
Saccharin is made from toluene extracted from coal tar after chemical reactions such as iodization, chlorination, oxidation, ammoniation, crystallization and dehydration. The chemical name for saccharin is o-Sulfonilimide. When the sodium saccharin solution is heated and boiled, it will gradually decompose to generate a small amount of benzoic acid, resulting in a bitter taste.
Its sodium salt is called saccharin sodium or soluble saccharin, which is easily soluble in water, and the sweetness of dilute aqueous solution is about 300 to 500 times that of sucrose. Sodium saccharin is an organic chemical synthetic product, which is a food additive rather than a food. The raw materials for making saccharin mainly include toluene, chlorosulfonic acid, o-toluidine, etc., all of which are petrochemical products.
Scope of Use of Sodium Saccharin
As a sweetener, sodium saccharin is widely used in food, such as general beverages, jelly, popsicles, pickles, candied fruit, cakes, frozen fruit, protein sugar, etc. It is a commonly used synthetic sweetener for dairy food, meat food, baked food and pasta food.
Electroplating industry: Electroplating grade sodium saccharin is mainly used in electroplating nickel as a brightener. Adding a small amount of sodium saccharin can improve the brightness and softness of electroplated nickel. The general usage amount is 0.1--0.3 grams per liter of potion.
Feed additives: Animal feed, aquatic feed, vitamin feed, sweeteners, etc.
Daily chemical industry: Toothpaste, mouthwash, eye drops, etc.
In addition to food, as long as the products are not eaten, such as toothpaste, saliva, etc., most of the sweeteners still use sodium saccharin as a sweetener, because these things do not need to be eaten.
The Production Method of Sodium Saccharin
The production technique is: Take phthalic anhydride as raw material is through amidate action, esterification, doazo reaction, replacement(metathesis)reaction, chlorination reaction, aminating reaction, acid out, neutralization reaction, make soluble saccharin solution, this solution, through decolouring, concentrated, crystallization, drying, dry, is made to soluble saccharin finished product. Aminating reaction in traditional soluble saccharin production process is to take ammoniacal liquor as raw material, and the adjacent sulphuryl chloride methyl benzoate obtaining with chlorination reaction reacts and generates saccharin ammonium.
What Is the Difference Between Insoluble Saccharin Sodium and Saccharin Sodium
Soluble saccharins(sodium saccharin) are sugars that are easily soluble in water. They can act as energy storage, transfer media, structural substances and ligands for functional molecules such as glycoproteins in plants.
Insoluble saccharin is the intermediate of sodium saccharin. Insoluble saccharin is the reducing sugar corresponding to the soluble reducing sugar, and is a sugar substance without reducing properties. The two are sugars with different concepts, with different meanings and different characteristics.
Soluble reducing sugars refer to sugars with reducing properties. Among sugars, both monosaccharides containing free aldehyde groups or ketone groups and disaccharides containing free aldehyde groups in the molecule have reducing properties. The reducing sugars mainly include glucose, fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose, etc. Insoluble reducing sugars are the corresponding reducing sugars of soluble reducing sugars.
Insoluble saccharin, it generally contains two crystal waters, which is easy to lose crystal water to form anhydrous saccharin, which is white powder, odorless or slightly aroma, and tastes sweet and bitter. It can be used as a sweetener for food, suitable for making chewing gum, and as a sweetener for people who need low-calorie food.
